BC주 고교생 장학금 제도 변경

9월 새 학기부터 선택시험 없애

BC주 고교생 장학금 제도가 변경된다.

교육부는 9월부터 시작되는 2011-2012년 새 학기부터 장학금 수여 기준을 바꾼다고 발표했다. 장학금 혜택을 받기 위한 선택적 시험(Optional Provincial Exam)을 시행하지 않고 필수 시험 성적에 근거, 장학금을 지급하기로 했다. 고등학교 이후 교육 기관들이 입학 때 선택적 시험을 요구하지 않아 응시자가 줄었고 자연스럽게 장학금 미수령액도 커지게 됐다는 설명. 주 시험 성적 장학금(Examination Scholarships)은 일반적으로 1000달러다. 최상위 20명에게는 2500달러가 수여된다.

BC주 고교생은 한 때 졸업하려면 12학년 주 정부 시험을 거쳐야 했다. 지난 2004년 졸업 프로그램 변경으로 10, 11학년 학생에 대한 시험이 추가, 12학년 시험은 '선택'으로 바뀌었다. 학생들의 진로 결정에 보다 많은 선택권을 주기 위해서였다. 하지만 이후 대학 수준의 교육 기관에서 입학 규정을 변경, 고교 12학년 시험 성적을 사용하지 않게 됐다. 따라서 현재 80% 이상 학생이 이 시험에 응시하지 않는다. 결국 250만 달러 정도 장학금 미수령 금액이 발생했다. 주 교육부는 제도 변경 후 500만 달러 장학금이 학생들에게 수여될 것으로 기대하고 있다.

-Courses that have required exams: Science 10, Apprenticeship and Workplace Mathematics 10, Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-calculus 10, Social Studies 11, BC First Nations Studies 12, Civic Studies 11, English 10, English 10 First Peoples, Français langue premiere 10, English 12, English 12 First Peoples, Français langue premiere 12 and Communications 12.

-Grade 12 courses that had optional exams: Applications of Math 12, Principles of Math 12, English Literature 12, History 12, Geography 12, Geology 12, Physics 12, Chemistry 12, Biology 12, French 12, Spanish 12, German 12, Mandarin 12, Japanese 12, and Punjabi 12. The Français langue seconde immersion 12 exam is also optional; however, French immersion students must write this exam to earn their bilingual diploma.

The Ministry of Advanced Education provides funding for the provincial scholarship program and the Ministry of Education administers it.
